چکیده

Energetic particle transport in a finite amplitude magnetosonic and Alfvénic turbulence is considered using Monte Carlo particle simulations, which involve an integration of particle equations of motion. We show that in a low-β plasma cosmic ray acceleration can be the most important damping process for magnetosonic waves. Assuming such conditions we derive the momentum diffusion coefficient Dp for relativistic particles in the presence of anisotropic finite-amplitude turbulent wave fields, for flat and Kolmogorov-type turbulence spectra. We confirm the possibility of larger values of Dp occurring due to transit-time damping resonance interaction in the presence of isotropic fast-mode waves in comparison to the Alfvén waves of the same amplitude (cf. Schlickeiser & Miller 1998). The importance of quasi-perpendicular fast-mode waves is stressed for the acceleration of high velocity particles.

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Simulating field-aligned diffusion of a cosmic ray gas

The macroscopic behaviour of cosmic rays in turbulent magnetic fields is discussed. An implementation of anisotropic diffusion of cosmic rays with respect to the magnetic field in a non-conservative, high-order, finite-difference magnetohydrodynamic code is discussed. It is shown that the standard implementation fails near singular X-points of the magnetic field, which are common if the field i...

Damping of Cosmic Magnetic Fields

We examine the evolution of magnetic fields in an expanding fluid composed of matter and radiation with particular interest in the evolution of cosmic magnetic fields. We derive the propagation velocities and damping rates for relativistic and non-relativistic fast and slow magnetosonic, and Alfvén waves in the presence of viscous and heat conducting processes. The analysis covers all MHD modes...

Cosmic ray confinement in the diffusion approximation

Confinement of cosmic rays by turbulent magnetic fields and the relation between magnetic and cosmic ray energy densities are investigated. Cosmic rays are assumed to diffuse preferentially along magnetic field lines. The implementation into a nonconservative high-order finite difference code is discussed. By solving an explicitly time-dependent equation for the cosmic ray energy flux, causalit...

Diffusion and drift of cosmic rays in highly turbulent magnetic fields

We determine numerically the parallel, perpendicular, and antisymmetric diffusion coefficients for charged particles propagating in highly turbulent magnetic fields, by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We propose simple expressions, given in terms of a small set of fitting parameters, to account for the diffusion coefficients as functions of magnetic rigidity and turbulence level, an...
